A small-group wine day that teaches you to taste: three boutique wineries, a guided blind tasting and a lunch of woodfired pizza at Olio Bello. Waves of Wine takes at most 13 guests for about six hours, with pickup from accommodation in and around Margaret River, Cowaramup, Gracetown and Prevelly.
The blind tasting is the hook. The guide takes the group through a set of unnamed wines and how to read them, and you keep access to the operator’s tasting template afterwards. The day also stops at a coastal lookout over one of Margaret River’s surf breaks, where the guide explains how the climate, geography and soils that make the waves also shape the wine; from about June to November there is a chance of seeing whales from it, which the operator does not promise.
Included: the three wineries, the blind tasting, Italian-style woodfired pizzas and seasonal salads with a glass of wine at Olio Bello, a glass of wine with a cheeseboard at a winery, chocolate tasting, olive-oil and skincare sampling, and a craft brewery visit. Not included: extra drinks and purchases, coffee at the chocolate stop, and beers at the brewery.
The wineries and brewery change from day to day, so treat the published itinerary as an example. You get a message before 6 pm the day before, confirming the pickup address and time. Smart casual clothes suit the cellar doors, the drinking age is 18, and the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.
