Swan Valley or Margaret River?

Swan Valley vs Margaret River: half an hour from Perth or three hours south, WA's oldest wine region or its most famous, and which wine tour suits a half day or a whole one.

Updated October 2026

Go to Margaret River for the wine Western Australia is famous for, and to the Swan Valley when you have half a day in Perth. The Swan Valley is 25 to 30 minutes from the Perth CBD and is the state’s oldest wine region. Margaret River is about three hours south and is where the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay that made WA’s name come from, with the coast, caves and forest around the vines.

When the Swan Valley is the better choice

When you are based in Perth and have an afternoon. It is close enough that a tour can collect you after lunch and have you back for dinner, and you will spend most of the time tasting rather than driving. It also suits a group that wants more than wine: the region counts breweries, distilleries, cideries and a meadery among its stops.

When Margaret River is worth the drive

When the wine is the point of the trip, or when you want the wineries the state is known for overseas. Margaret River’s reputation rests on its Cabernet and Chardonnay, from Cape Mentelle’s Jimmy Watson trophies in the 1980s to Leeuwin Estate’s Art Series Chardonnay, and its cellar doors sit a few kilometres from the surf. Three hours each way is too far to do it justice in an afternoon. Give it a full day from Perth at the least, or better, stay a night and join a local tour.

Can you do both?

Yes: the Swan Valley on a free afternoon in Perth, Margaret River on a weekend down south. They are different enough that the second is not a repeat of the first.
