Margaret River Day Trip from Perth

Can you do Margaret River as a day trip from Perth? About 270 km and 3 to 3.5 hours each way: the day tours from Perth, the coach and train, and when to stay a night instead.

Updated October 2026

Yes, you can do Margaret River as a day trip from Perth, but about six to seven hours of the day is the road. Perth to Margaret River town is roughly 270 km, three to three and a half hours each way without stops, and the wineries are spread out once you get there. A tour from Perth does that driving for you. Staying one night in the region and joining a local wine tour gives you the same wineries with far less time in the vehicle.

The car is quickest, but the driver cannot taste much: in Western Australia the limit is 0.05 blood alcohol on a full licence and zero for novice drivers. On a wine day that leaves the tour, or a driver who sits out the tastings.

Day tours from Perth

These tours leave from Perth and come back the same evening. Most of them are sightseeing days with tastings rather than wine tours in the strict sense: expect the Busselton Jetty, a cave or a lighthouse alongside the wine.

Prices and review counts as listed on GetYourGuide in October 2026, in US dollars, not a quote. The 3-day price includes the accommodation.

There are 2-day versions too: Unwind Tours’ 2-Day Wine & Sightseeing Tour + Stay (US$878, two three-course winery lunches, Ngilgi Cave, a night’s accommodation) and Tour2Holiday’s Margaret River Escape 2-Day Tour (US$519, Jewel Cave, Cape Leeuwin and the Boranup karri forest, meals not included). Neither had reviews on GetYourGuide when checked in October 2026.

The day tour wins when you have one free day and nowhere to stay down south. Staying over wins on almost everything else: a local full day collects you from your accommodation in the morning (the Bushtucker tour at around 10:15 am), visits three wineries instead of fitting them around the highway, and leaves the next morning for the coast. Margaret River town, Cowaramup, Dunsborough and Busselton all have tours that collect from accommodation; the home page lists who picks up where.

If you only have half a day in Perth

The Swan Valley is Western Australia’s oldest wine region, planted from 1829, and 25 to 30 minutes from the Perth CBD. It is not Margaret River, but it is a real wine region you can do in an afternoon. The Swan Valley vs Margaret River guide compares the two.
